Reading this article made me realize how much of New Media each individual is exposed to and uses. A lot of the items created when New Media first started have adapted into modern advancements today. For example, the MIT Software Agents Group created Buzzwatch which is like today's Twitter. Another thing that is very logical and interesting is that "all digital media share the same digital code." I believe that this is very useful and important and I believe that this should also be incorporated into other subjects besides digital media. It would make life more simple if all things can be on the same wavelength. One example of this would be the electric outlets in different countries. Each country is different so when traveling one has to purchase a converter, which is sometimes a hassle because that converter can become lost or misplaced. Also, a great thing about sharing the same code is that I believe because of it, we are also able to virtually share screens and control another person's laptop without even being in the room. Today, a lot of jobs use digital media. It is very surprising how much digital media is used today. Everyone knows the general tv, music videos, etc. but it is also used in large companies who are promoting their work. This article was a little difficult to digest because I did not comprehend all the materials that were discuss, but what I understood was very interesting.
I think it's so interesting that Digital Media is fairly new. The term, Virtual Reality, was coined in the 1990s, and it was when everything virtual space, the use of computers, and physical space all came together. Today, augmented reality is everywhere. I know that the world is very technologically advanced, but as I am part of the in-between generation, I forget how many things can be related to augmented reality. Everyday uses like CCTV and cellphones all use or have augmented reality. It's hard to believe that with technology the term augmented reality can be used anywhere. Programs like Motion make it easily accessible to produce augmented reality. I think today, we are more consumed in virtual reality than ever. The article talks about how movies and TV are all a part of virtual reality. An average person in the US watches about 5 hours of TV and this does not include surfing the web or using your phone for apps or even tv.
Manovich sees augmented reality as something external and something we found but I disagree. I see it as something that has existed and something that was woven into our lives. The 3D space, virtual reality have been around since the beginning of time, but there was limited knowledge about it. He also questions if we experience the world as singularity or duality. I believe we experience it as duality. There is a difference between what is real and what is not real. Everyday experiences are real while watching tv or a movie is not. It is real in the sense where we are experiencing it, but it's not something we need in order to live. I believe that multi-media is one of the mediums that uses electronic vernacular space the most. It combines both 2D and 3D space as well as combining other mediums to create a work of art. As technology advances I believe that augmented reality will only increase.
